OREM, Utah -- In conjunction with Perry Homes, Utah Valley University athletics has named Haley Curtis of women's soccer and Kalani Norris of volleyball its Scholar Athletes of the Month for September.
The two are the first finalists for the Scholar Athlete of the Year award, given at the annual Wolverine Club Awards at the conclusion of each athletic year. The duo was also recognized at Wednesday's Wolverine Club luncheon.
A senior from Yakima, Wash., Curtis currently leads Wolverine women's soccer in goals scored with three through six matches. Her 11 shots on goal also pace the squad. She is one of six Wolverines to start each match this season and ranks third on the team in minutes played. Last season, Curtis was a second team All-Great West Conference performer and was also named to the GWC All-Academic team. A biology major, she currently holds a 3.83 cumulative GPA.
As a sophomore, Norris was named second team All-Conference and to the Academic All-Conference Team. This season, as a junior, the Panguitch, Utah, native and former Utah State MVP in high school is second on the team with 3.14 kills per set. She has started every match for UVU volleyball and is tied for second on the team in sets played. Norris has a 3.74 cumulative GPA while majoring in elementary education.
Both Curtis and Norris are back in action this weekend as women's soccer and volleyball each host home matches. Women's soccer faces UC Davis in a Sunday matinee at 11 a.m., an event which is preceded by the Wolverine Classic -- a four-team volleyball tournament played at the PE Building Friday and Saturday. The Wolverines will face Idaho State, UC Irvine, and Utah at the Classic.
