OREM, Utah -- New Utah Valley University Athletic Director Vince Otoupal opened the 2013-14 Wolverine Club calendar by addressing club members at the year's first luncheon on Wednesday in the UCCU Center.
In addition to Otoupal's address to the packed room, in-season coaches also spoke to those in attendance. The luncheon was catered by new UVU partner Quizno's Subs.
"Wolverine athletics is very excited for our year of competition to get started. We are poised and ready to perform at the top of our game athletically and academically," Otoupal said. "The Wolverine Club is a vital part of Wolverine Athletics and, like our teams, we rely on them to perform at a high level too. They are the team behind Wolverine Green and we cannot perform at our best without them. At our lunch Wednesady we talked about the Wolverine Way and the Wolverine Club is all in. It's going to be a great year."
UVU Athletics also recognized its Perry Homes Scholar Athletes of the Month in Kalani Norris (volleyball) and Haley Curtis (soccer). Holton Hunsaker (men's basketball) was also presented with his Great West Scholar-Athelte of the Year award and his award for being named to the Division I-AAA Athletic Directors Association Scholar-Athlete Team.
It's a busy weekend at UVU with nearly every in-season team playing in Orem. The cross country teams are hosting the UVU Invitational. The men's and women's races will take place on Friday at Lakeside Park with the men getting underway at 11 a.m. and the women at 11:45 a.m.
Later Friday, the volleyball team will host the Wolverine Classic with Idaho State, UC Irvine and the University of Utah all part of the event. The Wolverines host Idaho State on Friday night, face UC Irvine Saturday at 12:30 and Utah on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. Closing out the weekend on Sunday will be the women's soccer team hosting UC Davis at 11 a.m. at Clyde Field.
