Retired senior associate athletic director D.J. Smith was recognized with a special presentation and the Michael V. Jacobsen Bronze Wolverine Award.
Dr. Smith is in his 28th year in the UVU Athletic Department. He came to UVU in 1985 as the Sports Information Director. He won nine NJCAA "First in the Nation" awards for athletic media guides from 1985 to 2002, and one "Second in the Nation" award.
In 2003, he was promoted to an Associate Athletic Director position. He was named UVU Employee of the Quarter in 1990, and received the UVU Presidential Award of Excellence in 2008 and the UVU Board of Trustees Award in 2012.
Before coming to UVU, Dr. Smith completed his Bachelor's (1973) and Master's (1975) degrees in Recreation Management at Brigham Young University. He earned a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Utah in 1987. He received the "Outstanding Graduate Student" award at Utah in 1983.
Smith is a graduate of Brush High School in Brush, Colorado. Dr. Smith served in United States Marine Corps, with an Honorable Discharge in 1975. Smith has been active in civic, community and church service throughout his career, and is currently serving as the President of Orem Rotary. He and his wife, Roberta, reside in Orem. They have six children and 20 grandchildren.
