McPherson Places Third in Heptathlon at Air Force

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- Utah Valley University sophomore Michael McPherson scored a total of 5,112 points in the heptathlon and finished third at the Air Force Academy Indoor Combined Events held at the Cadet Field House. McPherson was in second place after Day 1 Thursday. New Mexico's Richard York won the heptathlon with the score of 5,424 points and Air Force's Michael Tibbs was second with 5,249 points. UVU freshman Rusty Jones placed seventh with 4,893 points and Matt Williams was 15th with 4,358 points. In the pentathlon, UUV freshman Lexie Esplin placed eighth with 3,136 points, while Jessica Lingwall (3, 048) and Ali Shields (2,850) placed 11th and 16th, respectively. Former UVU athlete Tiera Zaugg-Hansen, participating unattached, won the event with 3,553 points. The Wolverines return to action Saturday in the Air Force Team Challenge. Action begins with the weight throw at 8:30 a.m. The remaining field events begin at 10 a.m., while the running events are scheduled to begin at noon.
