PROVO, Utah - Sophomore distance runner Trac Norris led the Utah Valley University track & field teams on Thursday by breaking the school record in the 1-mile run at the BYU Cougar Invitational.
Norris not only set a new school record in the race with an altitude adjusted time of 4:04.40 but he also qualified for the NCAA's in the 1500-meter run with the blazing adjusted time of 3:46.29. The Wolverine sophomore's time in the 1-mile run was also good enough for second place in the event.
Behind Norris' standout performance, UVU also won six individual events at the meet. Junior Michael McPherson led the way by taking home the 200m dash as well as the long jump, while sophomore Aisha Graham won the women's 800m, sophomore Chris Brower took the 3000m steeplechase and fellow sophomores Mike Keith and Sam Sweet earned first-place finishes the men's and women's 400m dashes. McPherson won the 200m with a time of 21.22 seconds and the long jump with a mark of 7.20m or 23'-07.50" while Graham earned her 800m victory with a time of 2:14.25, Brower took his 3000m steeplechase in 9:54.53 and Keith and Sweet won their 400m races with respective times of 49.02 and 57.42.
McPherson's 21.22 seconds in the 200m dash should also be good fast enough to get him into the NCAA's in the event as well.
"We had some solid performances, which included a number of personal bests in nearly every event." UVU head coach Scott Houle said. "Today's meet was a good tune-up for us and I'm pleased with how well our kids competed."
The Wolverines also had a number of solid marks from the following as all of them finished in the top-three of their respective event: Kyler Sprague (2nd, 110m hurdles, 14.89 and 3rd, 400m hurdles, 52.36), Jacob Peterson (3rd, 110m hurdles, 15.01), Sydney Bricker (2nd, 400m, 58.59 and 3rd, 200m, 25.22), Corrie Lamoreaux (3rd, 400m, 59.18), Taylor Gomez (3rd, 800m, 2:19.38), Nelson Orton (2nd 3000m steeplechase, 11.00.29), Lauren Hicks (2nd, long jump, 5.46m or 17'-11" and 3rd, triple jump, 11.74m or 38'-06.25"), Ali Shields (3rd, long jump, 5.41m or 17'-09"), Bryce Richards (2nd, triple jump, 13.33m or 43'-08.75"), Caitlyn Woodward (3rd, javelin, 42.14m or 116'-06.50") and McKay Burnett (3rd, hammer, 51.74m or 169'-09").
UVU will now have just one regular-season meet remaining, next Wednesday's Weber State Twilight Invitational, prior to hosting the 2014 WAC Outdoor Championships at the Hal Wing Track & Field in Orem on May 14-17.
