HUMBLE, Texas -- Utah Valley University track and field remains in the hunt for its fourth consecutive Great West Conference titles, coming away with three first-place finishes on a busy Day 2 of the championships.

“Things went really well today,” said track and field coach Scott Houle. “The kids are really competing well and I feel we’re in a better spot right now than we anticipated we’d be. Today was just a great day on many sides.”

Rusty Jones, who won two of five decathlon events Thursday, took three more on Friday to claim first place in the men’s decathlon. Jones finished 500 points better than the second place finisher, fellow Wolverine and last year’s decathlon champion Stephen Wickhamshire. UVU’s Michael Ashton took third in the event to sweep the top three spots for the Wolverines.

Jessica Lingwall followed with a first place finish in the women’s heptathlon, holding off North Dakota’s Megan Grey by just under 100 points. Finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, in the combined event were UVU’s Autumn Robertson and Ali Shields.

Maryn Pincock took the women’s shotput with a personal-best 45-10 to round out UVU’s top finishers.

Friday also featured 12 preliminary running events, the finals of which will take place on Saturday, the final day of the championships.

Due to harsh weather arriving late in the day, the prelims for the men’s 400 meter hurdles and the men’s and women’s 200 meter dash were pushed to Saturday.

The final in the men’s and women’s steeplechase was also moved to Saturday morning and will begin the day's action at 8 a.m. MT.

Final action in the field events begins at 9 a.m. with the women’s high jump, while the final track events begin at 11:00 a.m. with the men’s 4x100 meter relay.
