UVU's First NCAA Run Ends in Austin Saturday Night
May 29, 2010 AUSTIN, Texas - Utah Valley University's first-ever NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field postseason run came to an end Saturday evening in Austin, Texas at the West Regional as freshman Allah Laryea-Akrong just missed advancing to the championships in the 200-meter run. Laryea-Akrong had a very strong performance in the qualifying race but he ended up finishing in 15th place overall, just three spots back of advancement. Laryea-Akrong finished the sprint with a time of 21.07. "It was fun to be here this weekend, as we competed against some of the premier athletes and programs in the country," UVU head coach Scott Houle said. "This region includes so many schools from all around the country, from Arkansas to Wisconsin to UCLA and everywhere else in-between. For us to come out and hang with them was a fun experience." Saturday marked the conclusion of the Wolverines 2010 outdoor seasons. 2010 was another very successful year for UVU. Both the men's and women's teams repeated as Great West Conference champions, qualified six individuals to their first-ever NCAA postseason meet - as the half dozen competed at this weekends West Regional at the University of Texas - and UVU also saw countless conference, school, and personal records fall, not to mention also winning numerous individual conference accolades. When asked about looking forward to next year and what direction the program is headed Houle added, "We think we are setting ourselves up very nicely to continue to build the program forward in depth and ability. Being here, we saw that we need to compete at bigger meets during the season so we can help improve our chances in this type of setting. Workouts are great, but it's also what you do during the season that will help prepare your team for this level of a meet."
