DENVER - Utah Valley University's Ali Shields has been named the Western Athletic Conference women's field Athlete of the Week for the week of April 21-27. The conference honor was announced Tuesday by the league office.

Shields, a senior from Lodi, Calif. (Lodi HS), placed third in both the triple jump and the 100-meter hurdles, and fourth in the long jump at the BYU Robison Invitational last weekend. The UVU senior reached a mark of 11.45m in the triple jump and finished with a time of 15.02 seconds in the 100m hurdles to earn the pair of third-place finishes. Her personal-best mark of 5.73m in the long jump was not only good enough for fourth at the meet but also ranks her tops in the conference in the event this season.

The conference honor is Shields' first of the season.

The WAC also recognized Texas-Pan American's Deandra Barroso as the league's track Athlete of the Week. Barroso, a junior from Mercedes, TX (Mercedes HS), won the 400-meter hurdles at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight, hosted by Rice University, with a time of 59.98 seconds. Her time ranks second in program history and is a career best.

Kansas City's Bryce Miller and Idaho's Andrey Levkiv were also recognized as the league's men's track and field Athletes of the Week on Tuesday as well.

Shields and her Wolverine teammates will head back to BYU this week for Thursday's BYU Cougar Invitational. The one-day meet will begin at BYU's Clarence F. Robison Track & Field Complex at noon.
