Pincock, Nielson Sweep GWC Track Honors
May 4, 2012
NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Utah Valley's Maryn Pincock and Cliff Nielson have been named Great West Conference Track and Field Athletes of the Week after outstanding performances last week. The awards were announced Friday by the conference office.
Pincock posted the best discus throw and shot put in the GWC this season at last week's dual meet with Southern Utah. The junior from Boise, Idaho, shattered her school record in the discus that she set last week by nearly seven feet with a toss of 164 feet, 1 inch and then set a new personal record in the shot put with a throw of 44-3.25. Pincock finished second in both events at the dual. For Pincock, it is her second GWC honor this season. The men's honor went to Nielson, a sophomore from Gowanda, N.Y., after he won the men's mile in a time of 4 minutes, 21.18 seconds at the UVU/SUU dual. Earlier that same day, Nielson posted an even better time in the mile with a 4:11.46 at the BYU Invitational. Others nominated for this week's honors were Houston Baptist's LaDarien Harris and Jessica Whitt, North Dakota's Shawn Johnson and Megan Storstad, and Seattle U's Stephen Squatrito and Bethany Richards. Houston Baptist will host the 2012 Great West Conference Track and Field Championships on May 10-12, at Humble, Texas.
