5 Wolverines Set to Compete at NCAA First/Second Rounds

AUSTIN, Texas -- Utah Valley University student-athlete Michael McPherson, 1 of 5 Wolverines to qualify for the NCAA Track & Field First and Second Rounds, will begin action Thursday in the men's long jump at 12:30 p.m. MT at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.

Three more student-athletes, in addition to McPherson, who also qualified in the 200 meters, are in action Friday -- Maryn Pincock (women's discus, 11 a.m.); Nicholas Taylor (200 meters) and McPherson (7:25 p.m.) and Brooke Hodson-Davies (women's 3,000 steeplechase, 7:50 p.m.).

McKell Camp-Nielson (javelin) begins her competition at 4 p.m. Saturday.

In order to advance to the NCAA Championships June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore., the student-athletes was achieve the following in their events:

• In the long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, hammer and javelin, the 16 best marks, after tiebreakers, will qualify from the first round of three preliminary attempts to the final round of three tries. The top 12 advance to the NCAA meet.

• In the 3,000m steeplechase, the top 3 from three quarterfinal heats, plus the next 3 fastest times (12), advance to the NCAA meet.

• In the 100 meters, 200m, 400m, 800m, 100/110m hurdles and 400m hurdles, the top 3 from six first round heats, plus the next 6 fastest times, advance to the quarterfinals (24).

McPherson (21.33 seconds) and Taylor (21.34) enter the meet ranked 42nd and 47th, respectively. McPherson (7.49) is ranked 30th in the long jump.

Camp-Nielson (48.21 meters) is ranked 16th in the javelin; Hodson-Davies (10:30.51) is ranked 36th in the 3000 steeplechase and Pincock (50.12) is ranked 45th in the discus.
