RIVERDALE, Utah -- Utah Valley University’s cross country teams wrapped the 2013 season on Friday at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships at Schneiter’s Riverside Golf Course. The Wolverine men finished 13th overall with the women landing in 18th.

Senior Brooke Hodson-Davies was the top finisher for UVU, placing 33rd in the women's 6K with a time of 21:27.3. Bridget Hazel crossed the finish line second for the Wolverines, in 89th overall, in 22:26.9.

"Brooke had a great race individually," head coach Scott Houle said. "She took the team out and was able to hang on and get herself in the top 35 which is a great feat in this region with so many ranked teams."

For the men, Seth Gutzwiller ran the 10K in 31:14.8, finishing 63rd with teammate Jason Lynch in 67th with a time of 31:23.1.

"As a team we wanted to get into the top 10 and that didn't happen, but individually every race was pretty darn good," Houle said. "Most everyone ran their goal times and this year's times would have placed them up a lot further last year."

In what is considered the deepest region in the country, featuring the top two teams in the nation and seven of the top 29, it was No. 2 Northern Arizona that edged No. 1 Colorado in the men's team race. Defending regional and national champion Kennedy Kithuka of Texas Tech took home the individual title in 29:23.6.

With four of the top six finishers, 10th-ranked Colorado won the women's team title with just 29 points. New Mexico's Sammy Silva won the individual race, crossing the finish line in 20:29.3.

For Utah Valley, the Wolverines finish their first season in the Western Athletic Conference with men's championship and will return key redshirts on both sides in 2014.

"We bring back a lot of experience next year. It's going to be fun to have the redshirts come back and join this group. I'm looking forward to see where we'll be next year," said Houle.
