LUBBOCK, Texas -- Utah Valley fell 6-2 at Texas Tech on Saturday in day two of the Red Raider Classic. Billy Burgess homered and went 3-for-4, driving in both runs for the Wolverines (1-2).
The Red Raiders (2-0) scored twice in the first, getting four consecutive two-out base hits to take the early lead.
Burgess led off the second with his home run but Texas Tech got that run back in the second. The Red Raiders also had single runs third, sixth and seventh on their way to to the win. Nick Popescu had three hits to pace Texas Tech.
For the third straight game Utah Valley got a solid effort from its bullpen. Preston Olson and Jeremy Gendlek threw 5.2 innings and allowed one earned run. Through three games the Wolverine bullpen has allowed just the one earned run in 12.2 innings.
"Our bullpen gave us chance but we just couldn't make the plays or get the hits we needed," said head coach Eric Madsen. "It's disappointing when you fail to execute. We have to get better production throughout our entire lineup."
Utah Valley got its second run in the eighth when Burgess singled home Chris Benson from second. Benson had two hits for the Wolverines, who will wrap up the weekend against Western Michigan on Sunday at 10 a.m. MT. Kyle Beecher gets the start on the mound for the Wolverines.
