Baseball drops twinbill at Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. -- Utah Valley baseball dropped both ends of a Saturday doubleheader at Pacific, 5-2 and 4-2. The teams are scheduled for a another twin bill on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. PT/11 a.m. MT.

In the first game, Pacific starter Mike Hager limited UVU to two hits in 8.0 shutout innings. The Wolverines were able to break through with two runs on an RBI double from Sean Moysh in the ninth inning. Taylor Murphy had three hits to lead the Tigers (6-5), who finished with 11 hits in the opener.

Andrew Freter (0-2) lasted six innings and took the loss with Hager improving to 2-0 with the win on the mound.

In game two, Seth Rhineer had two doubles and scored both Utah Valley runs. Down 2-0 in the fourth, Rhineer and Riley White had back-to-back two-out doubles to get the Wolverines on the board. Pacific got that run back in the fifth to lead 3-1.

Rhineer led off the top of the sixth with a double, moved to third on a groundout to third by White and came in to score on a groundball off the bat of Zac Fuller.

The score remained 3-2 until the seventh, when Eric Lockwood drove in his second run of the day on a two-out single to plate Brett Sullivan.

Utah Valley got a two-out single from Mark Krueger in the eighth but he was the only baserunner of the final two innings for the Wolverines. Michael Benson pitched the ninth to pick up his third save this season. Jon Haberman (2-0) got the win for the Tigers while Ryan Evans (0-1) took the loss for UVU. Kyle Valgardson pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief for Utah Valley.

The doubleheader Sunday is due to Friday night's scheduled series opener being postponed due to rain.
