March 13, 2012
TEMPE, Ariz. -- No. 11 Arizona State got a pair of first-inning home runs to jump out early on its way to a 9-0 win over Utah Valley in the first of a two-game midweek series at Packard Stadium. Five pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout of the Wolverines (5-9), snapping UVU's three-game win streak. Deven Marrero hit a two-run homer down the line and Abe Ruiz hit a solo shot to give ASU an early 3-0 lead. The Sun Devils (11-4) took advantage of an error to pick up an unearned run in the second before two more in the fourth and another in the fifth gave the home team a 7-0 cushion. For Utah Valley, five different players each had one hit on a night when the Wolverines' best chance to score was cut down at the plate in the sixth. The teams will take the field again on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. PT/7:30 p.m. MT. The game can be heard live on 960 AM the Zone and WolverineGreen.com.
