DALLAS – Utah Valley University jumped out to an early lead in taking the opener of a three-game set at Dallas Baptist, 10-5, on Friday at Horner Ballpark. Zach Slesk went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Andrew Freter allowed just two earned runs in six-plus innings of work for the Wolverines (6-15).
“We had a good approach at the plate and had some timely hits early that gave us some confidence,” said head coach Eric Madsen. "Andrew was outanding and pitched really well all night. Dallas Baptist is an excellent team and it’s great for us to get this opening game.”
The Wolverines scored in six of their nine times at bat, defeating the Patriots’ (15-6) Friday starter Paul Voelker, who allowed entered with a 2.23 ERA and surrendered five runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings against UVU.
UVU jumped ahead early, scoring five times in the first three innings. After a run in the first, UVU scored twice in both the second and third innings to lead 5-0 early.
In the opening inning, Jordy Hart led off the game with a double and scored on a Sean Moysh double. Slesk brought home a pair of runs in the second with a two-run single, scoring both Craig Brinkerhoff and Riley White.
In the third, Colby Croft singled home Mark Krueger and Beau Kallas to give UVU a 5-0 lead.
A four-run fourth brought the Patriots within a run, 5-4. DBU got two of the runs in the frame after a two-out error prolonged the inning.
Utah Valley responded though, getting a sacrifice fly off the bat of Greyson Bogden to lead 6-4. The Wolverines plated two more in the seventh – when Slesk reached on a fielder’s choice with the bases full to score one run and White scored when the ball got away at first – giving UVU a 9-4 lead.
In addition to Slesk’s night at the plate, White was 3-for-4 and scored three times while Brinkerhoff doubled and scored two twice.
Freter, in 6.1 innings, got the win allowing two earned runs (four total) on five hits while striking out six. Chad Michaud retired the side in order in the ninth to finish of the game.
Dallas Baptist got two hits and three RBIs from David Martinelli, who hit a solo home run in the eighth inning.
UVU finished with 14 hits on the night while Freter, Kyle Valgardson and Michaud limited DBU to six hits. Freter moved to 1-3 with the win while Voelker dropped to 3-2.
The series continues on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. MT.
