OREM, Utah - Sacramento State used a big third inning on its way to spoiling Utah Valley University's home opener on Thursday night at Brent Brown Ballpark, taking the first of a three-game series, 13-3.
The Hornets (12-11) scored three in the second and exploded for eight runs in the third to take an early 11-2 lead. An error in each of the run-scoring frames prolonged the innings and Sac State took advantage, scoring six unearned runs.
The Wolverines (7-11) answered the three runs in the second with two of their own. Goose Kallunki doubled off the wall in left to score Austin Heaps and then scored on Kai Hatch's single.
In the third, the Hornets sent 11 hitters to the plate and got home runs from Derrick Chung and Rhys Hoskins. Hoskins homer - a three-run shot - came as part of a three hit, three RBI day.
Kallunki had the second of two RBIs on the day in the sixth, with a sac-fly to score Jake Rickenbach for UVU's final run of the night. Austin Heaps had two hits to lead Utah Valley.
Justin Higley went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs while Will Soto and Clay Cederquist joined Hoskins with three-hit days. Sac State finished with 19 hits.
Tanner Mendoca threw 8.0 innings and allowed three runs on five hits to get the win while Blake Krahenbuhl was tagged with the loss.
The second game of the series is set for a 6 p.m. MT first pitch on Friday night.
