OREM, Utah -- Behind a complete-game effort from Adam Gunn and a 14-hit night at the plate, Utah Valley University opened a four-game Great West Conference series with a 10-3 win over Houston Baptist University on Thursday at Brent Brown Ballpark.

Gunn, who was named GWC Pitcher of the Week on Wednesday, struck out five and didn't allow a walk and upped his record to 4-4 in his third complete game of the season. The Wolverines (13-18, 4-1) got two hits each from five different players to win their second straight game.

"I thought tonight we had as good of energy as we've had all season," said head coach Eric Madsen. "It was good to see us come out that way. We had production from a lot of guys and Adam did a great job controlling the game on the mound."

The Huskies (13-15, 3-2) scored in the first on a two-out single by Jake Gonzalez before Kade Andrus tied things in the third with an RBI single. The Wolverines used a three-run fourth to take a 4-1 advantage; an error aided in the three-run inning, with Jordy Hart and Stone Ramsey driving in runs.

In the fifth, Willie Pratt delivered a two-out RBI double to plate Colby Croft, giving the Wolverines a 5-1 lead.

Utah Valley broke things open with a five-run eighth, getting four hits in the inning including a pinch-hit, two-run single by Beau Kallas. Mark Krueger had an RBI double in the frame.

Riley White, Andrus, Kai Hatch, Krueger, and Hart were the five players to collect a pair of hits. In addition to Kallas' two RBIs, Andrus and Pratt also drove in two runs.

Gonzalez added a two-run home run in the ninth to drive in all three runs on the night for Houston Baptist. Tyler Hoelscher (4-3) took the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on 10 hits.

The series continues on Friday with a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. M.T.
