Big Offensive Day Leads to Doubleheader Sweep
April 13, 2012
CHICAGO -- Utah Valley University won both ends of a Great West Conference doubleheader on Friday behind a big day at the plate, 21-4 and 16-10, over Chicago State University.
Goose Kallunki tied a school record with six RBIs in the first game before Austin Heaps bookended home runs in the first and ninth innings in the nightcap, for his first career multi-homer game. UVU (20-11, 6-0 in GWC) has now won 13 games in a row.
"It was good to get two wins. We need to figure out a way be more thorough throughout a full game but we did what we needed to do," said head coach Eric Madsen.
Kallunki got things started with a grand slam in the opener and an inning later doubled home two more runs to pick up all six RBIs in the first two innings. The grand slam is Kallunki's second in the last week and gave him home runs in three straight games and in five of his last seven.
The Wolverines built an 8-2 lead after three before putting six on the board in the fourth to take a 14-2 advantage. In the fourth, six different players drove in one run each as UVU sent 10 hitters to the plate.
Sean Moysh led off the sixth with a home run on the first pitch of the inning, starting another big run-scoring frame. Alex Exon also had a three-run blast in the inning as Utah Valley put five more runs on the board.
The Wolverines capped their scoring with two in the ninth on a two-run double by Willie Pratt.
Utah Valley finished with 21 hits in the game, four each from Moysh and Kai Hatch. Kallunki and Heaps had three hits each with Exon, Pratt and Moysh all driving in three runs. Moysh also scored four runs for the Wolverines.
Preston Olson moved to 4-0 after pitching five innings and striking out six. Craig Brimhall threw two scoreless innings in relief in the scheduled seven-inning contest.
In game two, Heaps hit a two-run blast to right to get the Wolverines on the board early before the Cougars answered with two in the bottom of the inning. Albert Carpen tripled to lead off the inning for Chicago State as part of a five-hit game.
UVU answered with two in the second, getting an RBI singles from Jordy Hart and Moysh.
An eight-run fourth helped the Wolverines extend the lead to 12-2. Jake Rickenbach drove in a pair of runs with a double and also scored two runs in the frame. Over the course of the doubleheader, UVU combined to score 14 runs in the fourth inning.
Chicago State tried to work its way back into the contest, getting within four, 12-8, with a two-run single by Carpen in the seventh inning. The Wolverines gave themselves a cushion though, scoring three times in the eighth - two on a base hit by Pratt - before Heaps' ninth-inning home run to straightaway center.
Moysh had his second straight four-hit game to combine for eight over the course of the twin bill. Heaps also had four hits and three RBIs with Pratt also driving in three runs.
Albert Carpen finished a home run shy of the cycle and hit a long fly ball to center in his final at-bat, but Hart made the catch with his back at the wall in the ninth.
The teams will play another doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon CT.
