Sac State uses big inning to pull away, win second straight

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State used an 8-run sixth inning to pull away from Utah Valley University and win 10-0, in seven innings on Friday at John Smith Field.

The Wolverines (14-22, 7-7) trailed 2-0 in heading into the sixth before the Hornets (24-14, 12-2) broke the game open. Sac State scored seven of the eight runs after there were two outs and nobody on base.

Mark Krueger had two hits to lead UVU while Kyle Moses had three hits for Sac State. David Del Grande had a two-run double and Will Soto hit a two-run home run as part of the big inning for the Hornets.

It’s the second straight shutout win for Sac State in the series, which defeated Utah Valley 5-0 on Thursday. Hornets starter Sam Long allowed just four hits, striking out five in handing the Wolverines their second consecutive shutout loss for the first time in the program’s NCAA history. Long moved to 5-0 with the win while Ryan Evans was hit with the loss, falling to 2-4.

The series finale will be Saturday at 2 p.m. PT with sophomore Danny Beddes getting the start for Utah Valley.
