Orem, Utah - It didn't take long for Utah Valley to put Dixie State away as the Wolverines scored 11 runs in the first three innings en route to a 14-4 victory over the Rebels.

Utah Valley (17-23) scored seven runs in the first and two runs in each of the second and third innings to build an insurmountable lead. The win is the fourth consecutive for the Wolverines. The Rebels fell to 19-18 with the loss.

Derrick Thomas went 2-for-3 from the plate with three RBI. Austin Heaps added three RBI on two hits including a two-run home run. Keiki Albino added three RBI on 2-for-5 hitting.

It was Dixie jumping out to an early one-run lead as Klint Anderson hit a 2-1 pitch over the right-center fence. After Kyle Pratt walked to put a runner on with only one out in the inning, Scott Croshaw made a beautiful diving catch in foul territory and threw out Pratt who as tagging and attempting to take second.

In the bottom half of the inning the Wolverines opened the frame with five consecutive hits. Thomas had a two-run single, Heaps had a RBI double and Croshaw added a two-run single. UV sent 12 batters to plate. Seven had base hits while the Wolverines tied a season-high for runs in an inning with seven.

Utah Valley's two second-inning runs came on a Albino two-run single. In the third inning, Dixie got a lead off home run from Tim Mott. UV came back with a pair in the bottom half of the frame with a Heaps two-run homer.

UV pitcher Bryan Smith pitched well, giving up only the two homers over the first seven innings before the Rebels scored a run on two hits in the eighth. Smith pitched eight innings and only gave up three runs on four hits while striking five.

The Wolverines added a run in the fifth on another Thomas RBI and two in the bottom of the eighth.



UV will go for a series sweep against Dixie State in Saturday's series finale. Game time is 1 p.m.
