OREM, Utah -- Utah Valley University's bid to sweep NYIT fell short on an afternoon the offense struggled in an 8-3 loss on Saturday at Brent Brown Ballpark.
The Wolverines (23-25, 14-6), who saw a five-game winning streak come to an end, mustered only three hits on the afternoon against NYIT starter Steve Cotov. Cotov improved to 4-3 after allowing three runs in 6.1 innings. He worked around eight walks in the outing before Evan Cohen threw 2.2 hitless innings to finish the game.
The Bears (10-41, 8-16) scored three times in the first before Utah Valley tied it with one in the first and two more in the second. Greyson Bogden's two-out base hit plated two runs and tied the game at 3-3.
The score remained tied until NYIT broke it open with a four-run sixth. Robert Loftus's RBI single gave the Bears a 4-3 lead and two batters later Ali Rodriguez drove home the final two runs of the innings with a base hit. Rodriguez was 2-for-2 in the game and 9-for-11 during the four-game series.
Nick Sebastian capped the scoring with a solo home run to left. Sebastian finished with three hits on the day with the Bears totaling 12 hits in the win.
Utah Valley still controls its own destiny in a bid for its fourth straight Great West Conference title. The Wolverines travel to Texas-Pan American next weekend and are battling the Broncs and Northern Colorado for the league title. Next week's series begins Thursday night in Edinburg, Texas.
Prior to the game, UVU honored its eight seniors in their final home game. Jeff Barto, Taylor Berg, Justin Campbell, Adam Gunn, Kai Hatch, Blake Krahenbuhl, Willie Pratt and Brian Whatcott were all recognized.
