CHICAGO -- Winners of three straight, Utah Valley University heads to the Windy City this weekend for a three-game Western Athletic Conference series at Chicago State. Game one is schedule for Friday at 3 p.m. CT with Saturday’s first pitch slated for 3 p.m. CT and Sunday’s finale at noon CT.
The Wolverines (10-18, 3-3) handed neighboring BYU an 8-3 loss on Tuesday night in Provo, with Devin Nelson pitching into the ninth inning in the UVU win. Craig Brinkerhoff hit his fourth home run and drove in three runs and Mark Krueger hit a pair of doubles and also had three RBIs for Utah Valley.
Last weekend, UVU took two of three from Bakersfield in winning its second straight weekend series. Against the Roadrunners, UVU swept a Saturday doubleheader behind two strong starts on the mound. Ryan Evans pitched 7.2 shutout innings of two-hit baseball and was named the WAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Danny Beddes followed that outing with 8.1 innings in the finale, allowing just two unearned runs on three hits.
During the Wolverines’ three straight wins dating to Saturday’s twin bill, the pitching has just a 1.00 ERA and is limiting opponents to a .168 average.
Chicago State (9-14, 0-3) enters the series having lost five straight including all three in its WAC-opening series at Grand Canyon. The Cougars were edged in 11 innings to open the series last Friday night. CSU is in its first season back on campus on a newly turfed baseball field in 2014.
Next week the Wolverines return home for a three-game league series against Texas-Pan American starting Friday, April 11 at 6 p.m. MT.
