Baseball hosts NYIT in final home series of season

Utah Valley University will host its final home series of the 2013 season when NYIT comes to Brent Brown Ballpark for four games beginning Thursday at 6 p.m.

The final home series as members of the Great West Conference for the Wolverines, the weekend will also feature a doubleheader on Friday at 4 p.m. with the finale on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Prior to Saturday’s finale, UVU will honor its eight seniors: Jeff Barto, Taylor Berg, Justin Campbell, Adam Gunn, Kai Hatch, Blake Krahenbuhl, Willie Pratt and Brian Whatcott

The Wolverines (20-24, 11-5) enter the weekend in second place, behind league-leader Texas-Pan American. UVU will finish the regular season next week at UTPA before heading to Newark for the conference tournament.

UVU split four games at Northern Colorado, which hosts Texas-Pan American this weekend and is currently in third place. A seven-run 10th inning in the third game of the series helped the Wolverines to an 11-4 win before an eight-run eighth propeled them to a 13-5 win in the finale.

Mark Krueger had 10 hits in the series, including the go-ahead double in the 10th inning of game three, which drove in two runs with two outs.



NYIT (9-38, 7-9) enters the weekend in seventh place but split two games at Houston Baptist last weekend. The Bears are led by Ali Rodriguez, who is batting .299 with 22 stolen bases on the year.
