EDINBURG, Texas - Utah Valley University closes out the 2013 Great West Conference regular season at Texas-Pan American in a four-game series that will help decide the league’s final champion. Thursday’s opener starts at 7 p.m. CT, Friday’s doubleheader has a 3 p.m. CT first pitch and Saturday’s finale is slated for noon CT.

The Wolverines (14-6 in GWC) technically trail Northern Colorado (16-7) by a half game but lead in percentage points, which could decide the GWC champion and top seed in next week’s tournament in Newark.

Texas-Pan American and Houston Baptist are both 14-9 and are mathematically alive but would need help from NYIT, which hosts Northern Colorado.

UVU (23-25 overall) had won five straight including the first three in a series at home against NYIT. The Bears spoiled the bid for a sweep and made the Wolverines’ attempt at sweeping all four Great West titles more difficult.

The Broncs (24-27 overall) were swept at Northern Colorado last weekend after sitting in the driver’s seat for their first league title. UTPA has lost six straight overall heading in the weekend.

Utah Valley has won all 12 meetings between the programs, including a 4-0 record at Edinburg Baseball Stadium over the Broncs in 2011. UVU also won four games in the same stadium in winning its first tournament championship in 2010; the Wolverines did not face UTPA in the tournament that season.

The final Great West Tournament begins next Tuesday from Bears & Eagles Stadium in Newark, N.J.
