Justin Smith Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals
June 11, 2009
Utah Valley University pitcher Justin Smith was selected in the 36th round (pick 1089) by the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday on the third and final day of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft. Smith, a junior righthander from Pleasant Grove, Utah, becomes the first Wolverine selected since Kam Mickolio, who was taken in the 18th round of the 2006 draft by the Seattle Mariners. "This is a great honor for him and for the program," said head coach Eric Madsen. "It's a testament to how hard of a worker he is and we really feel that the sky's the limit for Justin. He's as good a talent as anyone we've seen." Smith was named to the Division I All-Independent first team last week after finishing 8-4 with a 4.73 ERA. He struck out 91 batters in 91.1 innings, leading the Wolverines in nearly every pitching category.
