Smith Signs Deal With Cardinals

OREM, Utah - Former Utah Valley University pitcher Justin Smith signed with the St. Louis Cardinals and has been assigned to the Johnson City (Tennessee) Cardinals of the Appalachian League. Smith is forgoing his senior year at UVU after being drafted in the 36th round of the Major League Baseball draft on June 11. According to the Cardinals' website, he signed on Sunday with opening day in the Appalachian League today. Smith, a junior righthander from Pleasant Grove, Utah, was named to the Division I All-Independent first team after finishing 8-4 with a 4.73 ERA. He played one season at UVU after transferring from the College of Southern Idaho.
