Orem City Proclaims July 10, 2012 UVU Baseball Day

OREM, Utah -- The Orem City Council and Mayor Jim Evans honored the 2012 Utah Valley University baseball team for its success at Tuesday night's council meeting. The council and Mayor Evans proclaimed July 10, 2012, Utah Valley University Baseball Day. Director of Athletics Mike Jacobsen, head coach Eric Madsen, Associate head coach Dave Carter and a number of players were on hand to receive the recognition. "The entire City of Orem and all of Utah Valley should be extremely proud of our UVU Baseball team," said Mayor Evans. "This is an incredible honor for the players, coaches and fans as well as the Wolverine athletic department," said Madsen. "I'm so proud of what this team has accomplished and for all of the deserved accolades that our players have received." Utah Valley finished 47-12, winning its third straight Great West Conference regular season and tournament titles and finished ranked No. 29 in the final National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) poll. The Wolverines led the nation in several categories including batting, runs and scoring margin and also led the nation in winning percentage. The team's school-record 47 wins included a victory in April over College World Series champion Arizona. Individually, UVU had three players receive All-America honors as well as an Academic All-America distinction. Goose Kallunki, a consensus All-American, received first-team honors from the NCBWA, the American Baseball Coaches Association, Louisville Slugger and CollegeBaseballInsider.com along with a pair of third-team honors. Austin Heaps was named third-team All-American by the ABCA and Billy Burgess received honorable mention All-America from CBI.com. Burgess was also a Capital One Academic All-America third team member.
