OREM, Utah - Former Utah Valley star catcher Derrick Thomas has signed a professional contract to stay at home and play for the Orem Owlz, the Pioneer League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels.
Thomas, who led the Wolverines in batting (.401 average), home runs (15) and RBI (66) among several other offensive categories, will continue to play in front of a hometown crowd as the Owlz play their home games at Brent Brown Ballpark.
As a senior, Thomas was named to the All-Independent First Team after ranking in the top-five of nearly all offensive categories.
During the 2007 campaign, Thomas was named Independent Player of the Week on two occasions. He recorded six RBI in a single game twice during the season, tying the school record.
Thomas will join another local and former University of Utah star third baseman Jay Brossman on the Owlz roster.
