Moore, Mickolio, Jones Each Thriving in the Minors
Aug. 8, 2008
Three former Utah Valley University baseball players are having outstanding seasons in the minor leagues. Marcus Moore, who graduated just this spring as UVU's all-time wins leader, has been untouchable in his relief role on the mound for the Rookie Gulf Coast League Orioles this summer. He has pitched 14.1 innings without allowing a run, and has 26 strikeouts -- nearly two K's per inning. He is 2-0 with two saves and a 0.00 earned-run average. In his last outing Thursday against the GLC Red Sox he threw two scoreless innings, striking out five. Former UVU pitcher Kam Mickolio is having a great stint with Norfolk of the AAA International League. All his work has been in a relief roll for the Tides. In 14.2 innings he has given up just one run. He has 16 strikeouts, two saves, and a 0.61 earned run average. Mickolio's last outing was also Wednesday. He threw an inning and a third of scoreless relief against Columbus, striking out two. Former UVU slugger and Orem resident Mitch Jones has been tearing things up in the AAA Pacific Coast League with the Las Vegas 51's. In his last 10 games, he has hit for a .324 average with four home runs. On the season he is hitting .264 with 12 homers and 34 RBI. He leads the club with a .588 slugging percentage. He's also the team-leader in homers per at bat, with a round-tripper every 12.1 at bats. In his last outing Tuesday against New Orleans he went 2-for-3 with a homer, an RBI, and two runs. Moore and Mickolio are in the Baltimore Oriole organization. Jones is in the Los Angeles Dodger organization. Either or both Mickolio and Jones could become Utah Valley's first two big league players as soon as September.
