OREM, Utah -- After securing a Great West Conference win on Saturday, Utah Valley University steps away from league action to host Northern New Mexico on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. in the UCCU Center.
The Wolverines (11-13, 2-3) picked up a 66-49 win over Texas-Pan American on Saturday behind a big defensive effort that matched a season-low point total for a UVU opponent.
Utah Valley got big performances on both ends of the floor from several players, including 15-point nights from Jason Johnson and Ben Aird. Aird also hauled in 12 rebounds while Nick Thompson nearly pulled off his second triple-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Holton Hunsakeralso scored 12 as UVU hit 53.1 percent from the floor and limited UTPA to 31.6 percent shooting.
Northern New Mexico, an independent member of the NAIA, enters Monday's game having won five of its last six games. The Eagles knocked down 14-of-28 from three in an 18-point win on Saturday at Johnson & Wales.
"Coach Ryan Cordova has worked very hard to develop his program," UVU coach Dick Hunsakersaid of NNMC. "They're coming off of the best stretch of basketball in program history. They're shooting the ball very well and we know they'll look to continue that."
Guard Brandon Jones leads Northern New Mexico with 14.9 points per game. In the win over J&W, the Eagles had all five players reach double figures led by 20 from Matthew Brito.
Following Monday's game, Utah Valley will travel to Newark for a key match up against Great West-leading NJIT on Saturday afternoon.
