UVU, coming off its best shooting night of the season, holds a ½ game lead over New Mexico State in the league standing and a one-game advantage over Grand Canyon. All three teams are in action on Thursday night.
The Wolverines hit 60.4 percent from the field in earning an 89-88 win over Idaho on Saturday. Holton Hunsaker scored 28 points and Zach Nelson added 21, both just one point off of their season highs.
Chicago State (10-14, 5-5) dropped two games on the road last week at Texas-Pan American (71-68, OT) and at New Mexico State (84-55). The Cougars are currently fourth in the WAC standings.
"Coach (Tracy) Dildy's done a great job with the Chicago State program," UVU coach Dick Hunsaker said. "He's put his stamp on it with his defensive schemes and hard-nosed attitude."
Quinton Pippen is averaging 15.3 points per game with Clarke Rosenberg scoring 14.8 per contest for CSU. Rosenberg scored 19 to lead all scorers when Chicago State visited Orem on Jan. 25. In the game the Wolverines built an 18-point first half lead and held off the Cougars in the final minute to win 62-55.
For UVU, Hunsaker's 28-point night upped his team-high average to 13.7 per game. He is scoring over 15 points per contest in WAC play. Hunsaker scored five straight points in the final minutes to turn a one-point deficit into a four-point lead. He hit two free throws to put UVU up for good with 3:05 to go and followed with a 3-pointer, one of four he made, with 2:26 left.
Saturday is UVU's final road game before closing the regular season with three straight home contests. Tip for the game at Kansas City is 7 p.m. CT/6 p.m. MT from Municipal Auditorium.
