OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University can clinch at least a share of the Western Athletic Conference regular season title on Saturday when it hosts Texas-Pan American at 7:05 p.m. in the UCCU Center.
The Wolverines (17-10, 11-3) won an overtime thriller on Thursday over New Mexico State, 66-61, and now sit alone atop the WAC standings with two games to go. Texas-Pan American (9-20, 5-9) edged Bakersfield, 63-61, on Thursday and enters Saturday’s game having won three of its last four.
“The Broncs are playing very well and have consistently improved throughout the season,” said UVU head coach Dick Hunsaker. “They do an excellent job of executing their offense and defensively they work hard in their matchup zone.”
Javorn Farrell leads UTPA with 16.9 points per game. Shaquille Boga and Shaquille Hines follow him with 13.6 and 12.5 points per game, respectively. Boga scored 20 points to lead all scorers when the teams met on Jan. 30 in Edinburg, Texas.
Utah Valley won that game 67-53 behind 16 points from Mitch Bruneel, 15 from Holton Hunsaker and 14 from Keawe Enos. The Wolverines took a 14-point lead at the half and led by as much as 20 in the game.
In Thursday’s win over NM State, Ben Aird scored 21 points, six of which came in overtime. Keawe Enos hit three free throws with 4.3 seconds to in regulation to send it into the extra frame.
Hunsaker leads UVU with 13.8 points per game with Aird averging 11.7 points and 7.9 rebounds.
Next week the Wolverines will wrap up the WAC regular season against Bakersfield on Friday, March 7 on Senior Night in Orem.
