WENZHOU, China -- When the Utah Valley University basketball team arrived in China last week a familiar face greeted Coach Dick Hunsaker at the team’s opening game in Hangzhou. Chase Ulicny, a member of the 2003-04 Wolverines, and his family of four attended last Friday’s game against the Zhejiang Lions.

Ulicny and his wife, Riley, and their children Quinton and Daisy live in the bustling city of Shanghai and made the hour train trip to Hangzhou to see his former coach and team.

A job with Fortune 500 Avery-Dennison brought Ulicny, who learned to speak Mandarin on an LDS mission in Taiwan, to Shanghai for one year. The family has enjoyed it so much they’ve extended the stay to three years.

“It’s been different, much different than the U.S. You realize the comforts of home we don’t necessarily have here,” he said. “But it’s been worth it. We love the experience.”

Ulicny was on the first Utah Valley team to compete against a Division I schedule; Ronnie Price’s junior season and the freshman year for Ryan Toolson. It was a team that won the DI Provisional Championship on a buzzer-beater at Florida Gulf Coast.
