Men's Basketball Taught Financial Management by UCCU Reps
Sept. 1, 2010
OREM, Utah -- On the heels of the major announcement and new naming rights of The UCCU Center at Utah Valley University, a pair of Utah Community Credit Union representatives paid a visit to the Wolverine men's basketball team. Brad Norton, the senior vice president for marketing and development, and Karen Tebbs, the director of business development, both visited the newly-named UCCU Center and men's basketball players at UVU, and spoke to the student athletes about financial management. It's the second year in a row that Norton has been on campus to give the young team advice. "They talked about being smart with our money," said senior center Justin Baker. "We're young and when we leave college we want to have a stable financial future... really a good financial beginning. The number one thing I took from it was don't spend what you don't have." Tebbs talked about UCCU's branch on campus at UVU and the school and credit union's partnership on the Plus Card. Norton referenced the book On Your Own and preached to the players to "Build A Plan" and "Make A Commitment" to their financial futures. Norton also talked about 10 financial principles including how to spend, savings, interest, budgeting, prioritizing and education as well as avoiding bad debt. "They made a good point about how students have a tendency to get into debt," said junior guard Kevin Woods. "To make sure you save your money and spend it right. Get what I need, not what I want."
