OREM, Utah - Utah Valley returns from the short Christmas break this week in the Dr Pepper Classic and will face Hampton University in the tournament opener Thursday at 4:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. MT from Chattanooga, Tenn. The game can be heard live on 960 AM the Zone.
The Wolverines (6-8) will play twice in the two-day tournament and face either host Chattanooga or Longwood on Friday.
Hampton is the defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament champions from 2010-11. The Pirates (4-8) are led by Darrion Pellum's 17.6 points per game and 11.9 points and 8.9 rebounds from David Bruce. It will be the first meeting between UVU and Hampton. Both teams are looking to end losing skids.
"Hampton's a very experienced and athletic team. They have one of the best players we'll face this season in Pellum," said UVU head coach Dick Hunsaker. "I think we'll see two teams hungry, scrapping and clawing for a win on Thursday afternoon."
The Wolverines are coming off of a 65-52 loss at Montana on Dec. 22. In the game, Ben Aird finished with 12 points and three blocks but the Grizzlies used a big second half - after the game was tied at the break - to pick up the win.
Isiah Williams' 14.5 points leads UVU while Geddes Robinson averages 10.9 points and a Great West Conference-leading 10.1 rebounds. Robinson ranks 22nd nationally in rebounds per game.
Following this week's slate, Utah Valley returns home to host Wyoming on Jan. 3 at 7:05 p.m. MT in a game that will air live on Fox College Sports.
