Tommy Johnson enters his third season as the men's head golf coach, and enters his second season as the Director of Golf. After the announcement to add women's golf at Utah Valley State in the fall of 2005, Johnson was asked to oversee both programs. In his second season at the helm of the men's golf program Johnson led the Wolverines to five top-10 and three top-5 finishes. Johnson led the Wolverines to six top-10, and two top-5 tournament finishes during his first season in 2004-2005. The Wolverines best finish came in the Bill Ross Intercollegiate tournament on October 4-5, 2004, when they took second place. Johnson brings a long resume of professional and amateur playing experience to the Wolverine golf program including 14 professional titles, and 14 amateur titles. Johnson is still able to keep his game sharp. He most recently finished tied for 19th (212, 4-under) at the 2005 Utah Open played at Talons Cove. On August 1, 2004 Johnson shared first place prize money in the Utah Open held at Alpine Country Club. He holds course records at The Reserve at East Bay (62, Provo Open 2000), and the Logan Country Club (60, Cache Valley Open 2003). Johnson was a U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier in both 2003 and 2004, and he was named the Utah PGA Assistant Player of the Year in 2002 and 2003. When Johnson was hired at head men's golf coach in August of 2004 he came home where his college golf career began. After playing golf and graduating with an Associates degree from Utah Valley State, Johnson went on to finish his collegiate golf at Southern Utah University from 1994-1996. At SUU, he was the first ever golfer to win a NCAA Division I tournament. During his career as a Thunderbird golfer he was named "Most Improved Player", "Most Valuable Player", and he was an "Athlete of the Year" nominee. He graduated from SUU magna cum laude. |
