Feb. 12, 2013
ST. GEORGE -- Utah Valley University golfers Mason Casper and Michael Dart tied for 12th place Tuesday after shooting rounds of 71 and 75, respectively, in the final round of the SUU Pat Hicks Invitational contested at the par-71, 6,879-yard Sunbrook Golf Club. Casper entered the final day tied for 36th, but his 1-under par 71 vaulted him 24 spots. Dart, however, was tied for 10th, but dropped two spots after a second-round 75. As a team, the Wolverines were six shots better than Day 1 and moved up from a tied for sixth into fifth outright. "Our team started the day out strong but we gave away a few shots in the middle of the round to come up short," UVU men's golf coach Chris Curran said. "At the end of the day we are very optimistic and motivated for our spring season." Behind Casper and Dart, Corey Eccles (151) and Brayden Eriksen (151) tied for 29th after rounds of 77 and 74, respectively, while Stratton Schulz (153) tied for 46th. "Considering this was our first event out of the winter freeze, I'm proud of how my guys played," Curran said. Cal Poly (584) won the tournament by one shot over College of Charleston and two shots over Dixie State. Three players tied for first after shooting 142. The Wolverines are back in action Feb. 25-26 at the Snowman Getaway in Goodyear, Ariz.
