Eriksen Tied for Lead at Braveheart Classic
April 9, 2012
Brayden Eriksen fired a first-round 65 Monday at the Braveheart Classic at the par-72, 7.003-yard Oak Valley Golf Club, and followed it up with the second-round 73 and is tied for first place after the completion of Day 1.
Eriksen is one of three Wolverines in the top 20. Mason Casper, who shot rounds of 71-72, is tied for 11th, while Stratton Schulz (75-71) is tied for 20th. Jeff Holmes, who had a hole-in-one on 175-yard 11th, is tied for 42nd after rounds of 80-72.
In his opening round, Eriksen had six birdies, an eagle, and just one bogey.
"He putted very well. It was very impressive for a true freshman," UVU men's golf coach Chris Curran said. "He pout himself into contention for his first collegiate victory."
As a team, the Wolverines are in fourth place (579) just six shots out of second and 16 shot out of first. Sacramento State (563) leads, while Cal State Fullerton (573) is in second, and the University of San Francisco is third (575).
"We need to mount a charge Tuesday and see how we end up," Curran said. "Being in contention is all we can ask for."
Eriksen, whose best finish was tied 14th at the Kauai Collegiate Invitational last October, is tied with Sacramento State's Cameron Rappleye and San Francisco's Ji Hwan Park heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes.
