UVU Tied for 5th After Day 1 of ASC Championships

NORTH STONINGTON, Conn. -- Utah Valley University's Mason Casper fired a 1-over-par and teammate Brayden Eriksen shot a 4-over-par on the first day of the America Sky Conference Championship and sit in a tie for third and tie for 10th, respectively. "Mason and Brayden battled the win and are in contention to win individually," UVU men's golf coach Chris Curran said. "They both played very solid rounds." Casper had a birdie and two bogeys on the front and then had two birdies and a bogey on the back in recording the 73. Ericksen had four bogeys on the first and a birdie and a bogey en route to the 76. "There is still a lot of golf left and anything can happen on thisc course," Curran said of the Lakes of Isles GC. Casper and Eriksen were the only two Wolverines to shoot in the 70s. Joey Olson finished with an 82, while Stratton Schulz and Michael Dart shot 83 and 86, respectively. As a team, the Wolverines (314) are tied for fifth with Seattle, and are just one shot out of fourth, and four shots out of third. Sacramento State, with three players in the top 3, lead the tournament with a 290, and Houston Baptist is second at 307. "(Sunday) just wasn't our day. It was a disappointing way to start the conference championship," Curran said. "Monday is moving day. We have been a team that bounces back from a bad round and we'll need to do just that Monday." Sac State's Cameron Rappleye shot a 1-under-par 71, while teammate Ryan Williams (72) is second, and fellowe Hornet Jake Johnson (73) is tied for Casper for third. Second-round action at the at the 6,928-yard, par 72 course begins at 8 a.m. ET and can be followed live at www.golfstat.com.
