UVU Men Tie for 3rd at Battle in the Tetons

VICTOR, Idaho -- The Utah Valley University men's golf team, which entered the Battle in the Tetons as the defending champion, moved up two spots and finished in a tie for third after Tuesday's final round. The Wolverines had two players finish in the Top 10. Mason Casper (74-72-72) finished in a tie for third, while Joey Olson (72-73-74) finished in a tie for ninth. As a team, the Wolverines entered the day in fifth place, but moved ahead of Weber State to finish in a tie for third with Utah State University. "It's not the way we wanted to start the season, but there were some bright spots," UVU men's golf coach Chris Curran said. "We couldn't get a good fourth score all week. We know what we need to work and we will continue to improve." Behind Casper and Olson, Preston Richards (75-80-77) and Brayden Eriksen (75-77-86) placed in a tie for 36th and a tie for 43rd, respectively. UVU freshman Corey Eccles, who was disqualified after the second round, had two rounds of 71. Playing as individuals, Stratton Schulz (78-75-75) tied for 28th, while freshman Nick Smart (73-80-77) and Mike Dart (83-75-81) tied for 33rd and tied for 45th, respectively. The University of Wyoming (847) ran away with the tournament by beating second-place Valparaiso by 36 shots. Wyoming's Eddie Stewart won the tournament with rounds of 68-69-71. The Wolverines are back in action Sept. 10-11 at the Palouse Collegiate in Pullman, Wash.
