UVU Finishes in 11th in Pullman
Sept. 11, 2012
PULLMAN, Wash.-- Utah Valley University golfers Corey Eccles and Joey Olson shot rounds of 72 and 77, respectively, to finish in a tie for 34th at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate contested at Palouse Ridge. As a team, the Wolverines shot a final-round 303-- their best of the tournament -- to finish 11th. "We were better today but we are still a long way off of where we want to be," UVU men's golf coach Chris Curran said. "Corey really stepped it up and put together a good round. We are young and inconsistent and it shows." Preston Richards (79-83-75) tied for 52nd, while Brayden Eriksen (79-85-82) and Nick Smart (86-89-79) placed 65th and 67th, respectively. As a team, the Wolverines were 20 strokes better Tuesday than they were in the first round and 15 shots better than they were in the second round. The first two rounds were played on Monday. Washington State won the tournament by 12 shots over Arizona, while San Jose State was 15 shots back in third. Washington State's Hank Frame won the tournament at three-under par. At the 2012 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championships played at the par-71, 7,078-yard Conway Farms Golf Club in Forest Lake, Ill., UVU's Mason Casper fell 4 and 3 to Todd White of Spartanburg, S.C., in the Field of 32. The Wolverines are back in action Sept. 24-25 at the Dash Thomas Memorial in Boise, Idaho.
