Layton, Utah - Utah Valley State shot a combined score of 292, finishing in 12th place overall at the Purple & Red Invitational at Valley View Golf Course in Layton.
Jeff Gibson shot the Wolverines' low round of the day, a 1-under 71, while Nic van Vuuren's 1-over 73 helped him finish in a tie for 7th individually with an overall score of 2-under.
"All of our scores were pretty good," said head coach Tommy Johnson. "It's just that the competition was really good and we just didn't finish as well as I'd hoped."
The Wolverines finished the tournament at +20 overall, in a logjam that had just four strokes separating UV and 8th place Portland.
The University of Hartford defeated Utah in a playoff to claim the team title while Cal Poly's Dave Lewinski won the overall title after shooting a 4-under 68 and finishing 8-under.
Gibson (+7) finished in a tie for 40th with Dustin Robinson (+9, t-50), Andrew Smith (+10, t-56) and Tyler Weight (+13, t-66) rounding out the Wolverines competing as a team.
"We're just as good as these teams, we've just got to get a few putts to go in," said Johnson. "This team's getting better and better."
Utah Valley State will be in action next Monday and Tuesday in Moscow, Idaho at the Idaho Fall Classic.
