PALM DESERT, Calif. - After taking a first-round lead with a 5-under-par 67, Utah Valley senior Nick Nelson finished day one of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in second place, three shots back of Washington State's Kevin Tucker.

Nelson was 5-over in the second round and is even with 18 holes remaining at the tournament being played at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, California, home to the PGA's Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.

The Alpine, Utah native was in first place and held a two-shot lead over Denver's Daniel Wax through the first 18 holes. Wax is currently one shot behind Nelson, alone in third place.

As a team the Wolverines are in 14th place out of 19 teams, eight shots behind Northern Colorado and two in front of Arizona after rounds of 307 and 318.

Nicholas Tarasiewicz and Clark Fredrickson are both tied for 68th for UVU. Tarasiewicz had a solid opening round 73 while Fredrickson's best 18 holes came in round two with a 77. The final round of the tournament will be played Sunday morning.
