The Utah Valley State golf team is back in action this week as they compete in the Thunderbird Invitational hosted by in state foe, Southern Utah. The tournament will be played at Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, Utah on February 14-15. It will be a 36-hole tournament instead of the normal 54-hole format.
Head Coach, Tommy Johnson will take eight golfers down south to compete in the Thunderbird Invite. Five players will count in the team scoring and the other three will compete individually.
-We are excited to get back on the course,- said Johnson. -I hope we learned from our last tournament and make some adjustments.-
Sunbrook Golf Club is a familiar venue for Johnson. After playing golf and graduating with an Associates degree from Utah Valley State (when UVSC was a junior college), Johnson went on to finish his collegiate golf career at SUU from 1994-1996.
At SUU, he was the first ever golfer to win a NCAA Division I tournament. During his career as a Thunderbird golfer he was named Most Improved Player, Most Valuable Player, and he was an Athlete of the Year nominee. He graduated from SUU magna cum laude.
The Wolverines will have over a month off before they compete on the course again. They will travel to Arroyo Grande, California for the 2005 Fidelity National Title Intercollegiate at Cypress Ridge Golf Course on March 24-25.
