First Day Results
ST. GEORGE, Utah - All eight golfers finished in the top-25 on Valentine-s Day in the Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Southern Utah University. Utah Valley State finished with an 8-over 296 on Monday and are currently sitting in fourth place.
-Everybody played respectable,- said head golf coach, Tommy Johnson. -No one did anything special, they played respectable. But I know there is more there.-
Johnson decided to take eight players to compete in the Thunderbird. A practice round on Sunday dictated which five out of the eight would be able to count on the team standings during the 36-hole tournament.
Nic van Vuuren, Tadd Cox, Cody Powers, Ben Ward, and Milo Lines finished with the best scores on Sunday and were honored with the ability to play for the team on V-Day. Eric Jensen, Jeff Gibson, and Ryan Sausedo will compete as individuals during the two-day tournament.
Van Vuuren led the qualifying Wolverines with a 71 (-1). He sits in fourth place among the individual leaders. Two non-counting Wolverines (Jensen and Gibson) finished next best tied for 12 th at 73 (+1). Cox was next, shooting a 74 (+2), good for 18 th, and Sausedo and Powers finished with rounds of 75 (+3), good for 20 th. Ward and Lines rounded out the Wolverine scoring with rounds of 76 (+4), leaving them tied for 24 th.
-I really think we can win this tournament,- said Johnson. -They know they can win, they just have to go out and decided to take it.-
The Wolverines finished in front of two in-state foes, Southern Utah and Utah State, and just behind two more in-state foes, Weber State and Utah. Denver University currently leads all teams shooting even on the day.
Utah Valley will take on Sunbrook Golf Club on Tuesday for the second and final round of the tournament.
