Johnson finally overtook van Vuuren with a par on the 21st hole played during the round. Van Vuuren had a great run, winning medalist honors, and setting the course record (63) going into match play on Friday. He won his first two matches 6 & 5 and 3 & 2, to assure him a position among the final eight golfers, but couldn-€™t overcome Johnson in the first round on Saturday.
Van Vuuren was ahead by one hole going into the 18 hole, but he bogeyed the 18 th and opened the door for Johnson to send the match to extra holes with a par. Both golfers made pars on the next two holes, but van Vuuren bogeyed the third extra hole and allowed Johnson to move on.
It was a great run for van Vuuren, who represented himself and Utah Valley State well during the tournament.
