OGDEN, Utah -- Utah Valley University senior Preston Richards came away with a victory in the first round of match play at the 116th Utah State Amateur Championship on Wednesday, punching a ticket to the Round of 32 for the second consecutive summer.

After two days of stroke play split between the Ogden Golf and Country Club and the Valley View Golf Course, the field of 288 golfers was trimmed to 64 with the remainder of the tournament to be decided by match play. Seeded 35th to begin the match play portion on Wednesday, Richards topped former Weber State Wildcat and 30-seed Danny Hafen by a score of 3 and 2 to move on to Thursday's second round.

After going birdie-birdie-par on holes 5, 6, and 7, Richards took a four-hole lead just before the turn. But Hafen would respond with three straight pars to get to within 1-down of Richards after the Sandy, Utah, native strung together three straight bogeys.

A birdie on hole 12 and a par on hole 14 allowed Richards to regain control at 2-up, and the match ended on hole 16 after another Richards birdie put him ahead three holes with only two to play. The senior also advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2013 State Am.

Also competing in the opening round of match play was Wolverine sophomore JT Timmons. The Holladay, Utah, native, seeded 20th, went down 3 and 2 to 45th seed Colton Dallimore. Timmons grabbed a two-hole advantage after six holes, but Weber State junior Dallimore went on to claim six of the next ten holes -- including each of the final four -- to seal the match.

Richards is back in action on Thursday morning when he tees off at 10:15 a.m. against another WSU Wildcat in Devon Purser. Seeded third, the BYU transfer was victorious against 62nd seed Mark Mortensen by a score of 3 and 1 on Wednesday. The winner of Thursday morning's match advances to the Round of 16 that afternoon.
