OGDEN -- Utah Valley University senior Preston Richards won two matches at the 116th Utah State Amateur Championship on Thursday, pushing through to Friday's quarterfinal round.
Richards, who was knocked out in the Round of 32 in last year's edition, defeated third-seeded Devon Purser by a score of 2 and 1 to move into the afternoon's Round of 16. Richards led by as many as three holes at the turn after firing four birdies and two pars over the first nine holes, but Purser -- currently on the roster at Weber State -- battled back to within a hole after birdies on holes 12 and 14. After the pair halved hole 15, Richards claimed 16 and 17 to seal the match.
Moving on to his second round of the day, Richards drew former WSU Wildcat and 19-seed Marty Jacks. Jacks advanced to the Round of 16 behind a 4 and 3 victory over Chris Hermansen. A tight match throughout, Richards took an early advantage following an eagle on four, snapping stretch of three straight halves to begin the match. Richards went 2-up with a birdie on 8, but Jacks won holes 14 and 15 to make things all square with three holes remaining in regulation.
Three more halved holes extended the match to a 19th hole. Richards' par proved enough on the extra hole, besting Jacks' bogey to move on to Friday's quarterfinal round.
Having faced a current or former WSU golfer in each round of match play, Richards will do so again when he faces former Wildcat and Woods Cross, Utah, native Kurt Owen. Tee time is set for 8:15 a.m. MT.
The winner of Friday morning's match advances to a the semifinal round that afternoon. Tee time for the semifinals are projected for 12:15 p.m.
The Final of the 116th Utah State Amateur Championship will be contested on Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m.
