COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado - The Utah Valley State men's golf team opens the 2006 fall season this weekend by playing in Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational September 9-10.
Head coach Tommy Johnson will take seniors Nic van Vuuren and Chris Cole, junior Jeff Gibson and Dustin Robinson, and sophomore Andrew Smith to the invite.
"This is my strongest group since I have been at Utah Valley State," said Johnson. "We are in a position where we can compete on a higher level. I think this group will make some noise."
The 54-hole tournament, played at the Eisenhower Golf Club-Blue Course, is slated to begin with two rounds on Saturday starting at 8:30 am, while the final round will begin Sunday at 8:30 am.
Nineteen teams are slated to compete in this year's invitational. They are: Air Force, Air Force JV, California, Colorado State, Iowa State, Long Beach State, Nevada, New Mexico (B), Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, Southern Utah, UCCS, Utah, Utah State, UTEP, Utah Valley State, Weber State, Wyoming and Xavier.
"This is the strongest field I've ever seen to play in the Falcon Invitational," said Johnson.
UV's Nic van Vuuren placed second at the 2005 Falcon Invitational finishing 4-under (212). The Wolverines as a team finished 14th and ended up 36-over (900).
The Eisenhower Golf Club-Blue Course opened in 1959, named after former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who took part in the dedication ceremony. The 7,301-yard, par-72 course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and was named the eighth-best college course in the nation by Golf Digest in 2005.
