Layton, Utah - Utah Valley State senior golfer Nic van Vuuren is currently tied for 5th after shooting 3-under through two rounds at the Purple & Red Invitational at Valley View Golf Course in Layton, Utah.
van Vuuren opened with a 1-under 71 before a 2-under 72 in the second round. He is currently three shots behind Hartford's Maki Kobayashi, who fired a 6-under 66 in the first round.
As a team, the Wolverines sit in 11th place, out of 17 teams, after shooting a +16, 592.
Andrew Smith and Dustin Robinson both shot a 7-over, 151 and are tied for 57th. Smith rebounded after opening with a 8-over, 80 with a 1-under 71 in the second round.
"Part of the problem today was that we had to many big numbers. And they add up so fast that it makes a huge difference," said head coach Tommy Johnson. "But still I'm proud of how the guys fought and fought. We're a good team and the guys are just at the threshold of breaking through and realizing how good they are."
San Francisco leads the tournament after shooting an 8-under 568 through two rounds. Hartford (-5, 571), Utah (+1, 516), Weber State and Cal Poly (+4, 580) round out the top five.
The final round is scheduled for tomorrow morning.
